My favorite gifts to receive are books. I try to read a book a month. Many people think because I write books I would be tired of reading.

I like to read other peoples books because it gives me new ideas. It reinvigorates me and ignites my creative juices. Through out the year, I try to share books that I think will be helpful to our readers whether they are running a business, trying to move up the corporate ladder or trying to reestablish themselves back in the business world.

Here is my list of books for you to send, request from a friend or just buy for yourself.

"The Power of Nice" by Ronald M. Shapiro and Mark A. Jankowski, published by John Wiley & Sons. If you are a sports fan, especially a Cal Ripken, Jr. baseball fan, then you know Ron Shapiro’s name because he is the agent for Cal Ripken and many other star athletes. His book gives you insights on how to successfully negotiate anything you want without creating animosity.

"Successful Talent Strategies" by David Sears, published by AMACOM. Many of my clients, who range from early stage to Fortune 500, wrestle with how to select the right people and make sure they are put in positions that will allow them to thrive and grow. David Sears has studied some of the best companies in the world and provides you with insights on how grow and support human capital.

"Knock’em Dead" by Martin Yate, published by Adams Media. Every week I receive three to five resumes from people looking for their next opportunity after being laid off or as their company sunk. This book is a terrific primer for both the experienced and inexperienced at looking for jobs, getting ready for the interview and how to enhance your chances by answering questions in a certain way that will give you an advantage over other candidates.

"Permission to Prosper" by Azriela Jaffe, published by Prima. Many of the women I know are working mothers. Over the last year, my wife has joined me in my consulting business and has started a spin-off business, freeSpeakers (www.freespeakers.org). Azriela Jaffe, a very accomplished consultant and author, provides advice and insights to women who want both a career and family and how to convince and/or work with reluctant spouses in getting their support.

"Partnering" by Larraine Segil, Marshall Goldsmith and James Belasco, published by AMACOM. This book provides insights into the skills leaders need today to succeed, which is the ability to marshal support both from within and outside the organization to build a successful company. I can’t think of a major company that doesn’t have partnerships and where partnerships don’t drive a significant part of their business.

"How to Become a Rainmaker" by Jeffrey Fox, published by Hyperion. A terrific quick read on how to bring in sales and even more importantly how to retain customers.

"The Anatomy of Persuasion" by Norbert Aubuchon, published by AMACOM. It’s not good enough to have a good product, service or idea and expect people to buy in. You have to be good at persuading them and this book is an excellent guide in how to develop good persuasion skills.

With so many people sending food over the holiday’s, I am sure friends, colleagues and family will appreciate a good book.
